Baby Brezza Bottle Warmer Review: Great, But Doesn't Sterilize

Baby Brezza Bottle Warmer Review: Great Bottle Warmer, But Doesn’t Sterilize

I bought this baby bottle warmer in preparation for my son’s birth. Two and a half months in, this is how it fares.

By [Dim Nikov](/content/author/dimnikov/ "Check out all posts by Dim Nikov"/index.html), father, husband, and Dad's Picks founding editor. Dim became a dad to a baby boy at age 32. He started Dad's Picks to share the baby gear buying tips he wishes someone else had given him.

Having a child is a blessing, but caring for one, especially in the first few months of their life, is no easy task.

Newborns and young children require special attention to feel secure and develop well — and pediatricians agree that a big part of their development comes down to the breast milk or baby formula that they take in.

Expressed breast milk and premixed infant formula don’t necessarily have to be warmed, Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D., R.D., L.R.D., food and nutrition specialist, explains in a safety guide for baby food on North Dakota State University’s website. Despite this, many babies prefer warm bottles since the warmth reminds them of milk from the breast.

This is where baby bottle warmers such as the Baby Brezza Smart Baby Bottle Warmer come in. They promise to make warming baby bottles simpler and easier, so you don’t have to heat pans of water on the stovetop or hold bottles under hot running water for two uncomfortably long minutes for your baby to have a meal.

But not all baby bottle warmers are created equal.

My wife and I bought this baby bottle warmer towards the end of last year in preparation for our son’s birth. It sits on the dresser in the nursery, where we now feed him. Having used the device for two and a half months, I’m writing this review for other parents who are considering it. See my review below.

The Review in a Minute

The Baby Brezza Smart Baby Bottle Warmer has two warming modes: a warm-water bath mode for slow, steady warming, which retains the nutrients in breast milk, and a steam mode for fast heating of baby formula (or breast milk when your little one’s fussy, and you’re short on time).

No matter which of the two warming modes you select, you can choose between room-temperature and refrigerated milk for more precise warming. The bottle’s volume also needs to be set to one of nine different settings, ranging from 1 ounce (30 ml) up to 9 ounces (270 ml) — the maximum bottle volume supported by the device.

The device is super easy to use once you get used to the icons on the control panel. There’s also a chart on the back that provides a helpful reference if you or someone else in the house forgets which setting to use, especially when you’re sleep deprived or it’s late at night.

The tray makes it easy to slide bottles in and out of the warming chamber Photo by Dim Nikov / Dad's Picks

To use the Baby Brezza Smart Baby Bottle Warmer, take out the orange tray, place the bottle inside it, then slide the tray into the heating chamber and fill the chamber with water.

For slow warming with a warm-water bath, fill the warmer with water to the same level as the milk in the bottle. For quick heating with steam, fill it to the quick-warm fill line. A measuring cup that attaches to the back of the device makes it easy to measure out water.

This is as good a time as any to mention that I almost never use the quick warming mode — it takes about four minutes to heat 3.4 ounces (100 ml) of refrigerated breast milk or baby formula while still preserving the heat-sensitive antibodies, enzymes, and vitamins, so I don’t really see the point in using it. That said, the quick warming mode has been useful a few times when I was out with my little one and he was very hungry upon our return. So it’s certainly a nice-to-have when you need it.

Like other Baby Brezza products, the Baby Brezza Smart Baby Bottle Warmer has solid build quality, and in hundreds of uses, I’ve never encountered any issues with it. My only beef with this device is that it doesn’t do sterilization, a feature that other products in this category, such as the Grownsy 8-in-1 Bottle Warmer and Sterilizer, tend to have.

Who This Baby Bottle Warmer Is For

This baby bottle warmer is perfect for new parents who need to heat refrigerated breast milk or infant formula for their babies. There’s one huge caveat, though: Since it does not sterilize bottles, this bottle warmer is best suited for parents who use a separate sterilizer or have babies old enough that sterilized bottles are no longer necessary. Parents looking for a baby bottle warmer that doubles as a sterilizer should look elsewhere.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States recommends sanitizing your baby’s feeding items daily if your baby is under two months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system.

The National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom takes a more conservative stance and advises sterilizing your baby’s feeding items until they are at least 12 months old.

Baby Brezza Smart Baby Bottle Warmer Review

Looks

Looks score

★★★★☆ (4 stars out of 5)

The Baby Brezza Smart Baby Bottle Warmer is well-designed, with a white plastic body, a heating chamber with a see-through window, a black base, and a control panel with buttons.

To me, the device resembles other countertop appliances. This is advantageous because not all baby care products blend well with my home’s interior design. (I think it looks like one of those capsule-shaped coffee grinders.)

Whoever designed this bottle warmer clearly thought about the user. For example, the lid opens at a wide angle, allowing me to remove the tray without fuss. The tray’s orange color provides contrast, which somehow makes it easier to insert and remove from the warming chamber. Then there’s the see-through window, which takes the guesswork away when filling the bottle warmer with water.

I also like that this bottle warmer has very solid rubber pads on its base, which allow it to sit securely on the nursery dresser or my living room coffee table. I’ve tested other bottle warmers with plastic legs that tend to wobble and move all over the place; not great when you’re holding a hangry baby.

My only criticism design-wise is the control panel. Like the control panel buttons of other Baby Brezza devices — such as, say, the Baby Brezza Bottle Washer Pro — the buttons on this baby bottle warmer require a bit too much force to push. They’re not so difficult to press that they’re problematic, but it still irritates me sometimes because I have a thumb injury.

All in all, solid work by Baby Brezza’s product engineers on the design front. However, I score it a 4 out of 5 stars because of the touch panel.

Ease of Use

Ease of use score

★★★★★ (5 stars out of 5)

With just four buttons on the touch panel, I found the controls on the Baby Brezza Smart Bottle Warmer easy to learn and use. I don’t like buttons with icons because those icons can be (and typically are) confusing. However, in this case, they are clear enough.

The reference chart on the back of this bottle warmer is a nice touch. Remembering the exact settings and times for warming room-temperature vs. refrigerated milk and for plastic vs. glass bottles can be really challenging for a new parent, which is why I often referred to that chart in the first few weeks after my son’s birth. Beats flipping through user manuals or scrolling PDFs!

Baby bottles, sippy cups, and food jars slip in and out of the chamber easily thanks to the orange tray. But short and thin bottles — the kind you’d use in the first few months after your child’s birth — require some finger gymnastics because the tray itself is quite tall.

Even though the LCD display on the control panel is small and crowded, it’s legible. The display is also backlit, making it easy to read even in dim lighting at night.

When you remove the tray and bottle from the bottle warmer, they are wet, which means that water can sometimes drip onto the device and control panel. However, the control panel appears to be coated with a protective layer of plastic, so this hasn’t been a problem for me, at least not so far.

Adding the right amount of water is a no-brainer thanks to the see-through window on the chamber. For the quick heating mode, which uses steam instead of a warm-water bath, the plastic measuring cup helps you add the correct amount of water.

Cleaning this baby bottle warmer can be tricky, though. I’m supposed to pour out the water and wipe the interior dry, but that’s difficult. Because I have large hands, reaching all the way to the heating plate is nearly impossible. Water also tends to pool along the lid’s inner rim.

To descale this bottle warmer, the brand recommends using a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts water, then running the device until the mineral buildup has been removed.

Baby Bottle Warming

Bottle warming score

★★★★☆ (4 stars out of 5)

The controls on the Baby Brezza Smart Bottle Warmer allow me to select the heating mode (steady warming or quick warming) and the starting temperature of the milk (room temperature or refrigerated). I can adjust the time by repeatedly pressing the button for the heating mode I’ve selected.

To get the best performance from this bottle warmer, you need to add the correct amount of water. This is straightforward: fill the device with water until it matches the level of milk or formula in the bottle for the steady warming mode, or use the measuring cup to pour in the appropriate amount of water for the quick warming mode.

The key is to avoid adding too much water, as this will make the baby bottle buoyant and cause it to float, leading to milk or formula leakage and the need to clean the device and start over.

This bottle warmer can accommodate nine different bottle volumes, ranging from 1 ounce (30 ml) to 9 ounces (270 ml), in 1-ounce (30-ml) increments. That said, Baby Brezza advises against warming glass bottles with 1 ounce (30 ml) of liquid due to the risk of shattering. The minimum glass bottle size for the quick warming setting, on the other hand, is 3 ounces (90 ml).

The risk of overheating is low. However, with some thinner plastic and thicker glass bottles, I’ve noticed that the milk can come out quite a lot warmer than it should. Having used this bottle warmer so much, I’m now familiar with the time required for every bottle brand. For some bottles, I remove them 20-30 seconds before the program ends.

I downloaded the Bluetooth-connected mobile app and tried it once, but, frankly, I never used it again:

I don’t find the mobile app particularly useful. Photo by Dim Nikov / Dad's Picks

Warming a baby bottle only takes a few minutes, and I’m usually right next to the bottle warmer when preparing to feed my baby. There’s no need to check the remaining heating time on my phone when I can see it on the device itself. So I don’t find this feature useful.

Build Quality

Build quality score

★★★★★ (5 stars out of 5)

I’ve tested multiple products from Baby Brezza, and their build quality has always been excellent. The Baby Brezza Smart Bottle Warmer is no exception.

Although this bottle warmer is made primarily from plastic, nothing about it feels cheap or flimsy. The lid fits snugly onto the body, and the hinges feel sturdy and unlikely to break. I’ve accidentally dropped the bottle tray once or twice — despite it falling on my bare-tile floor, it didn’t crack.

Even though I regularly allow water droplets to splash on the control panel and I’m not particularly careful when washing the bottle warmer under running water, the electronics have held up well and remained problem-free.

Noise Level

Noise level score

★★★★★ (5 stars out of 5)

The Baby Brezza Smart Bottle Warmer gets five out of five stars for noise level because it operates quietly — extremely quietly. You can hear it operating only when it beeps at the end of a warming cycle. If you prefer it to remain quiet, you can stop the cycle a few seconds early.

Cost of Ownership

Cost of ownership score

★★★☆☆ (3 stars out of 5)

The Baby Brezza Smart Bottle Warmer comes with a somewhat higher price tag than other products in its category. If you select wisely from the available options, you can probably get a bottle warmer that doubles as a sterilizer for a lower price, which is why I score it a 3 out of 5 stars when it comes to price.

However, if a bottle warmer and nothing more is precisely what you need, it’s well worth the money. It looks good on the kitchen countertop, consistently warms bottles effectively, and is built to last.

The Verdict: It’s a Dad’s Pick

Product scorecard

Overall, the Baby Brezza Smart Bottle Warmer is a dad’s pick, but only if you’re looking for a baby bottle warmer and nothing more. It warms baby bottles and it does it well. Still, before buying, think carefully whether you might get more value for your money if you purchase a warmer and sterilizer in one.

As with any purchase, whether this baby bottle warmer is right for you or not comes down to your exact needs. Parents of newborns should probably look for a warmer that doubles as a sterilizer instead. However, if your baby is older than the sterilization age, a single-purpose bottle warmer like this one may be a better choice.
